THE NATURE OF THE REAL CLEANING
Thusday February 27th 2018
Masters 7-9 | Revelation 8
«Some Pharisees and teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem came to Jesus and asked him:-why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders?» They eat without first complying with the rite of washing their hands! -Matthew 15:1-2

As trivial as it may seem to wash your hands before eating, this question did Jesus in verse of heading, is more important than it seems. It represents the direct clash between Jesus and Orthodox Judaism. Included in this confrontation, are the key issues that separate Jesus from Judaism and that crystallize the principles of the new Covenant, on the assumptions of the old Covenant.

The Pharisees and the teachers of the law, had traveled from Jerusalem to Galilee, in order to investigate Jesus, trying to stop his Ministry and prevent the growth of its influence. Jesus had disgraced their traditions, which gave them reasons to criticize and condemn it. The issue at stake was the ceremonial purification, which had been instituted by the law of Moses. The primary concern of the Pharisaic law was external behavior and external activity.

Impurity was contracted to the touch or eat something that was considered impure. For example: touching a corpse, touching a woman after childbirth and during their menstrual cycle, touch a Gentile and touch certain animals which were considered not only impure but contagious. If a man touched something unclean, it turned into a dirty and unclean man, and if someone hits this man, this person also polluted. This meant that one could innocently become unclean by touching, in the street, someone dirty and impure. To fight against this possibility, they had established an elaborate system of washing and cleaning within the Jewish tradition, which was enforced.

Jesus took a turn total to the beliefs of the Pharisees and teachers of the law, by exposing the impurities of them and declare them the nature of the real cleaning. Jesus answered their questions, citing first Isaiah, who said of the Pharisees: ‘this people honors me with lips, but their heart is far from me. In vain I love; his teachings are just human rules.» (Matthew 15:8-9). Then Jesus called the crowd and told them: «-to listen and understand.» What defiles a person is not what goes into the mouth but what comes out of it.» (Matthew 15:10-11).

Real cleaning does not reach the heart from outside of the person. Good behavior can be imposed externally by means of a set of laws that require and reward correct behavior, but this will not produce true goodness. The true goodness comes from a clean and transformed, heart that is able to express themselves in a good behavior, which is the result of a real cleaning and not the cause. If a system of rewards and punishments of the behavior, is strong enough, it will end by inducing the conformity of the expected behavior pattern, but true cleaning is that of the heart and is only derived from God.
Prayer: Amado Señor, create in me a pure and clean heart which translates into goodness and love towards others. Thank you Lord.
TO reflect: Would my behavior is reflecting the true heart cleaning?

– Mateo 15:1-2 Tan […]

[6

post-1095","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-devocionales
["GET
