Amen.

LIFE IN THE WORD

Devotional 58 — Gratitude

Friday, June 19, 2026

«Give thanks in everything, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.» 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Researcher Brené Brown spent years conducting studies on gratitude and joy, and her conclusion was unexpected: gratitude is not the consequence of joy — it is its cause. The most joyful people she interviewed were not those who had the most reasons to be joyful. They were the ones who practiced gratitude most deliberately, especially in ordinary moments. Many of them kept journals where they wrote down three things they were grateful for each day. Brown concluded: «Joy without gratitude is unsustainable.»

Paul writes «give thanks in everything» — not for everything — and there is an important difference here. He is not asking you to pretend that suffering is good. He is asking that in the midst of any circumstance — whether good or difficult — you maintain an attitude of gratitude toward God, because you know who is in control. Gratitude does not depend on circumstances; it depends on perspective.

Ingratitude is more dangerous than it appears. In Romans 1:21, Paul describes the downward moral spiral of those who turned away from God, and the very first step of that spiral is ingratitude — they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him — and everything else followed from there. This is because gratitude is not an optional feeling; on the contrary, it is the foundation of a spiritually healthy life.

Today, before you focus on what you lack, pause and count what you have — and I do not mean what you have compared to others, only what you have compared to what you deserve. And what you deserve, apart from the grace of God, is silence. Gratitude transforms perspective, and perspective transforms life.

Remember: «A grateful heart does not wait until it has everything to be happy — it discovers that it already has enough.»

Let us pray: God, forgive me for the times I focused on what I lacked instead of what You gave me. Today I choose gratitude as an act of faith and love. Thank You for life, for salvation, for this day. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
